White Mountains Foliage
The White Mountains of New Hampshire are a quintessential autumn destination, drawing visitors from across the globe to witness breathtaking fall foliage. As the leaves transform into a palette of reds, oranges, and yellows, the region becomes a vacationer’s paradise, with numerous activities and natural sights.
The timing for peak colors varies year by year and across the region. While near the Canadian border, peak colors can come as early as mid-September, the southernmost ends of the White Mountains may peak as late as late-October. Peak colors also tend to arrive earlier at higher elevations making any viewpoint home to a gradient of colors.
Best Spots for New Hampshire Fall Foliage:
The Kancamagus Highway (Route 112) is known as one of the most scenic drives in New England, offering 34 miles of stunning views. The route winds through the White Mountain National Forest, with numerous pull-offs like Sabbaday Falls, Lower Falls, and the C.L. Graham Overlook. For the best photography opportunities, visit overlooks in the early morning and walk down to the swift river. My favorite location is in front of the Albany Covered Bridge, where rocks make an excellent foreground for long exposure shots.
Franconia Notch State Park is a treasure trove for nature lovers which becomes spectacular in autumn. The park features the iconic Flume Gorge, a natural granite chasm, as well as the 4,080-foot Cannon Mountain, which offers an aerial tramway for sweeping views of the surrounding foliage. However, the state park becomes incredibly crowded during peak foliage, so be sure to visit early in the day.
Although I have not been yet, the Mount Washington Auto Road is a staple for any White Mountain Trip. Taking visitors up New England’s highest peak, the Auto Road climbs almost 5,000 feet for sweeping views of the Presidential Range. During autumn, the road gives an excellent chance for peak fall foliage images with overlooks spanning thousands of feet of elevation and numerous states.
Though not in the heart of the White Mountains, Lake Winnipesaukee is a nearby gem for fall foliage enthusiasts. The lake’s 72 square miles of shimmering waters reflect the vibrant autumn colors, creating a stunning visual display. Scenic drives around the lake, such as along Route 11 and Route 109, provide plenty of opportunities to soak in the views. With dozens of idyllic New England towns nestled on the shoreline, Lake Winnipesaukee has so many opportunities for fall photography.
The White Mountains in fall offer an unparalleled blend of natural beauty and seasonal charm. From sweeping vistas to charming towns, The White Mountains has everything an adventure goer could want. Whether you’re driving along scenic byways, hiking through colorful forests, or simply enjoying the crisp autumn air, this region promises an unforgettable experience.
